The Snowed In Edition

Hi Reader,

Just popping in to say Hiiiiiiiii in case you are also stuck at home with winter weather and just ever so slightly losing your mind!

I wanted to share a few things we’ve been doing or plan to do (besides laundry) in case you need some fresh ideas to keep everyone occupied!

  1. Kids podcasts: we use the Yoto, but you can listen to these from anywhere!
    • Forever Ago
    • Brains on
    • Smash Boom Best
    • The Imagine Neighborhood
    • Story Pirates
  2. Audiobooks while coloring or playing catch: my kids LOVE the World’s Worst Children series by David Walliams!
  3. Making mini things: Emilia has been obsessed with making tiny things lately so we’ve been drawing, cutting out and taping together tiny backpacks, tiny lunches, tiny crayon boxes, etc.
  4. Scavenger hunt: we don’t really have enough snow to do much but it’s still been fun to go outside and see what interesting things we can find! We looked for big and small icicles, weird frozen things (the weirdest we found was a frozen snake in a block of ice!), animal tracks, and flowing water trapped under ice.
  5. Snow inside: when everyone is too cold or you’re just so OVER putting on all their layers, don’t forget you can bring the snow in! Put it in some bowls and give them some kitchen tools.
  6. Snow cones: this entertained everyone for a surprisingly long time (they tried different flavor combinations with whatever they could find in the kitchen) and I tried not to think about whether the snow is actually clean to eat. 🙈 This pic of Emilia with her wine glass cracked me up!

I’ve also been allowing plenty of screen time so that I can use that time to go be by myself and try to recharge a bit!

What I'm Reading

I just finished The Flatshare (very cute, fun read) and am starting Remarkably Bright Creatures, which I’ve heard people say is one of their favorite books of all time!

What I'm Making

I have about 7 cans of pumpkin in my pantry so today I’m planning to make these pumpkin muffins!

What I'm Watching

I like to watch reality TV while folding laundry because it’s so mindless. Right now I’m watching Owning Manhattan on Netflix. And when the kids want to hang with me, we have been watching Antiques Roadshow — it’s surprisingly fun to try to guess how much something is worth and be completely wrong every single time.

Stay warm and safe,

Kacie Barnes Standing In Front of Open Refridgerator

Hi Reader, Last week, I asked you to share your thoughts on me creating a talk or resources to help support conversations around weight and body image, and the response was overwhelming. I think it was the most replies I’ve ever gotten to a newsletter. Many of the stories shared broke my heart, and that’s exactly why I want to help with this topic. Every person deserves to feel confident and loved in their body, and to understand the value of nutrition and how it can help fuel your body. I...

Soup and Mac and Cheese Collage

Hi Reader, I’ve had a few conversations with moms lately about something that feels especially hard to get “right” – talking to our kids about weight, and how food relates to their body. And I shared a post on Instagram that resonated with a lot of you about what to do if your kid comes to you and says, “I’m fat.” (If you haven’t seen it you can read it on Instagram or Facebook.) I got a lot of great feedback from moms thanking me for talking about it openly and for helping them feel more...

Young Boy Leaning on Couch While Yawning

Hi Reader, I bought Teddy a book earlier this month that I can’t stop thinking about and HAD to share with you, because it’s so good. It’s called The Amazing Generation: Your Guide to Fun and Freedom in a Screen-Filled World by Jonathan Haidt. The reason I got it is actually pretty simple…I’m a grown adult and I don’t even like how my phone makes me feel most days. I find it distracting, addictive, and honestly… it often leaves me feeling worse about myself. And if that’s true for me, with a...
