Talking to kids about weight

Hi Reader,

I’ve had a few conversations with moms lately about something that feels especially hard to get “right” – talking to our kids about weight, and how food relates to their body.

And I shared a post on Instagram that resonated with a lot of you about what to do if your kid comes to you and says, “I’m fat.”

(If you haven’t seen it you can read it on Instagram or Facebook.)

I got a lot of great feedback from moms thanking me for talking about it openly and for helping them feel more equipped to handle that conversation.

But what do we do for our kids beyond that?

Too many of us know what it’s like to stress about food and weight. I don’t want that for our kids.

And as their parent you are in a great position to prevent them from that struggle. But it’s not intuitive! And it’s not easy.

So, I’ve been thinking about creating a talk for parents that walks through how to support kids as they get more aware of their body, and more independent with their food choices. A practical, grounded approach to food, bodies, and health that feels good – not like a topic that feels too overwhelming or scary to handle.

I’d love to share clear, age-appropriate language to use, practical examples of what to say (and what to avoid), and a simple framework for building lifelong habits so that their body never feels like their enemy.

What do you think? Hit reply and let me know. <3

IN THE RECIPE BOOK

Easy Tomato Soup

Is there anything more classic than tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich? We had this a few nights ago! This super simple homemade recipe is delicious paired with your favorite grilled cheese.

Homemade Creamy Mac and Cheese

No shame in some boxed mac and cheese (especially this kind!) but sometimes homemade just really hits the spot – and it’s easier than you’d think! I love it with some simple broiled salmon and green beans.

Blended White Bean Soup

I could eat this soup every single day, truly. Some weeks, I do! And Ben – who is not a white bean fan – gives it two thumbs up. He said he couldn’t really taste them. Try it out and let me know what you think!

This Week's Menu

Tuesday: Carrot + broccoli + hummus appetizer plate, tomato soup, grilled cheese

Wednesday: Greek Rice Bowls – my kids eat the ingredients separately, and only 15 minutes to prep!

Thursday: Homemade comfort foods: chicken fingers + mac n cheese + easy broccoli

Friday: Takeout (probably Chick-fil-A!)

Prepped snacks/breakfasts:

Hope your week is warm and cozy,

Kacie Barnes Standing In Front of Open Refridgerator

Hi Reader, Last week, I asked you to share your thoughts on me creating a talk or resources to help support conversations around weight and body image, and the response was overwhelming. I think it was the most replies I’ve ever gotten to a newsletter. Many of the stories shared broke my heart, and that’s exactly why I want to help with this topic. Every person deserves to feel confident and loved in their body, and to understand the value of nutrition and how it can help fuel your body. I...

Young Boy Leaning on Couch While Yawning

Hi Reader, I bought Teddy a book earlier this month that I can’t stop thinking about and HAD to share with you, because it’s so good. It’s called The Amazing Generation: Your Guide to Fun and Freedom in a Screen-Filled World by Jonathan Haidt. The reason I got it is actually pretty simple…I’m a grown adult and I don’t even like how my phone makes me feel most days. I find it distracting, addictive, and honestly… it often leaves me feeling worse about myself. And if that’s true for me, with a...
