GLP-1s, peptides, and “stacks”: what’s actually going on

I keep seeing influencers promote peptides for weight loss, and I know you're seeing them too.

The main ones they're talking about are GLP-1s (aka semaglutide, tirzepatide…brand names Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro).

But now it's even more confusing, with people talking about their “peptide stacks,” peptide journeys, and micro-dosing… It's the new wellness trend.

And honestly, I get why it’s all so appealing.

Especially when you’re a mom, your body has changed over time, and it feels like everyone around you is suddenly getting smaller.

But the reality is more nuanced than “magic fix.” Plus, most influencers trying to convince you on it are:

  • earning affiliate commissions
  • getting paid for leads or signups
  • or sending you through a structured sales funnel

That doesn’t automatically make it bad—but it does help explain why the messaging can feel so positive, simple, and compelling.

First & foremost

If you’ve struggled with your weight for a long time… that is not because you lack willpower.

There are real biological drivers of hunger, fullness, and what people call “food noise.” For some women, those signals are louder or harder to regulate.

That’s part of why medications like GLP-1s can feel life-changing. They don’t just “help you eat less”—they actually change the biology of appetite. And for some people, that’s incredibly helpful!

The pros can outweigh the cons, BUT it's crucial to work with qualified health professionals, and approach it with eyes wide open.

Here’s the part that’s getting lost right now

Peptides (including GLP-1s) are being marketed as a quick, easy solution.

Especially for women who:

  • are already relatively healthy
  • want to lose 10–20 pounds
  • are thinking about it more from a cosmetic perspective

That’s where we need more context.

What these medications actually do

GLP-1–based medications (the ones most commonly used for weight loss): reduce hunger, increase fullness, slow digestion, and decrease the reward response to food.

Which means:

  • it becomes easier to eat less
  • food feels less “loud” in your brain

That’s why people describe the “food noise going quiet.”

But they are NOT designed for cosmetic weight loss, and they ARE meant to be a long-term (if not life-long) medication.

A note on “peptide stacks” and micro-dosing

This is where things get even murkier.

  • Many combinations being discussed online are not well-studied
  • Dosing approaches like “micro-dosing” are not standardized
  • Quality and formulation can vary widely depending on the source

Translation: a lot of what you’re seeing is ahead of the evidence and we simply don't have enough data to consider this a safe approach.

But @ilovepeptidesgirl says her peptide stack is life changing AND she gets it affordably...

Any of these influencers promoting peptides are sending you to a company that uses compounded versions of these medications (instead of brand-name prescriptions).

They are less expensive, but also less reliable and safety isn't guaranteed.

  • Compounded versions are NOT FDA-approved, and can be more variable in dosing, formulation, and consistency

That doesn’t mean every compounded option is unsafe—but it does mean there’s less standardization, which is where many safety questions come in.

Peptides are not a quick in-and-out solution

A few things that don’t make it into the ads:

  • These are typically used as long-term medications, not something you take for a few weeks before an event
  • It can take months to reach a full dose, so weight loss typically doesn't begin immediately
  • When you stop, weight regain is common (and you usually regain more fat than muscle, so the way your body looks will change)
  • Losing 10-20 lbs won't automatically make you happier, healthier, or feel better about yourself

And there are more tradeoffs to consider

Even when they’re working well, there are tradeoffs:

  • Eating less can mean getting less protein and necessary nutrients if you’re not intentional. (And even with intentionality, you may not be able to stomach enough of the foods you need.)
  • Weight loss includes muscle, not just fat
  • Side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, hair thinning, sunken eyes, sagging skin and wrinkles on your face

None of this means “no one should take them.”

It just means this isn’t a free pass with no downstream effects.

The bigger picture

These medications are a powerful tool.

For some women, they’re absolutely appropriate and helpful. But they’re not something you need to take just to:

  • keep up with what you’re seeing around you
  • or achieve a certain level of thinness

Because what you’re seeing right now? It’s definitely not just discipline.

It’s often: medication, and a version of the story that leaves out the full picture.

And the women who you see with extremely low body fat? That can come with real physiological costs, even if someone looks great in a swimsuit. It can affect your hormones, bone health, and increase fatigue, among other things. Thinness ≠ health.

If you’re thinking about it

You don’t have to decide right now.

You can:

  • get more information
  • talk to a provider you trust
  • and make a decision from a place of clarity—not pressure or self-loathing

If nothing else, I hope this gives you a more complete picture than what you’re seeing on social media.
