A little relief if snacks feel constant

Hi Reader,

I swear snacks are the bane of my existence.

The kids need them, but it’s this constant, never-ending task. Figuring out what to buy, actually going to buy it, negotiating what counts as an “acceptable” snack, and then watching everything disappear 10x faster than I expected.

It’s also this ongoing battle between convenience (very necessary) and wanting my kids to eat actual whole foods (also very necessary).

So until I can afford a personal chef, I’m over here doing my best—which sometimes looks like grabbing the 20-pack of Goldfish baggies, and sometimes looks like a homemade batch of oatmeal muffins.

And just so you know—kids needing a lot of snacks doesn’t mean something is wrong. It usually just means your kids are growing, moving, and using a lot of energy.

But if you’re kinda burnt out on it like I am… that is 100% normal.

Very few of us have the ability to avoid packaged snacks altogether. And very few of us have the budget to only buy the “cleanest” options. (And let’s be honest—very few of us have kids who aren’t going to ask for Goldfish at some point.)

So once you accept that snacks are basically a permanent part of parenting… like, forever… it gets a little easier. And you can let go of the guilt about the Goldfish (and the Pop-Tarts, and whatever else they convince you to buy)—it’s okay for those things to be part of the mix.

And since we’re all going to be buying and serving approximately one million snacks between now and the end of time, I pulled together some of my most helpful resources—healthier store-bought options, plus some simple recipes for when you actually have the bandwidth.

Banana Oatmeal Bar with Strawberries on White Plate

Hi Reader, This time of year always sneaks up on me! All of a sudden it’s field days, end of year parties, teacher gifts, schedule changes, and SO many things to keep up with. There’s two things that help me keep track of everything, so that I don’t constantly have that background feeling of don’t forget this, don’t forget that. The very moment something comes into my head, or I read the email about the party, or whatever it is–I offload it. There’s no, “I’ll deal with this later.” Nope nope...

Hi Reader, If your kid is suddenly refusing foods they used to eat, there’s a good chance it’s not about the food... It’s about who’s sitting next to them at lunch. A friend asked me something recently that I think so many of us are dealing with: “How do you handle peer pressure at school changing what your kid will eat?” Their child used to happily eat cottage cheese. Loved it.Now? Refuses it—because other kids don’t know what it is. Hummus used to be in the regular lunch rotation too… until...

Collage of Recommended Fruit Snacks

Hi Reader, If you’ve ever thought, “My kid eats fruit… but basically no vegetables… is that bad??” You are so not alone. And honestly? I want to take a little pressure off you today. Because somewhere along the way, fruit got demoted. Vegetables became the gold standard… and fruit started to feel like the less impressive option. But nutritionally? That’s not really how it works. Fruit and vegetables are both doing a lot of heavy lifting. And in some cases… fruit is outperforming vegetables in...
