Hi Reader, If your kid is suddenly refusing foods they used to eat, there’s a good chance it’s not about the food... It’s about who’s sitting next to them at lunch. A friend asked me something recently that I think so many of us are dealing with: “How do you handle peer pressure at school changing what your kid will eat?” Their child used to happily eat cottage cheese. Loved it. Hummus used to be in the regular lunch rotation too… until someone at school said it makes your breath smell. And just like that, it’s out. Honestly, this stage is incredibly frustrating! It’s hard to watch foods your child used to eat easily start disappearing. Especially when they’re foods you feel good about. Here’s the truth: This is normal (and not in your control). As kids get older, they become more aware of what other people are eating, and what other people think. Food is just one place that shows up. Instead of trying to convince them or fix it, keep your messaging simple and neutral:
No big explanations. No food debates. Just steady, matter-of-fact confidence. The only answer you need when they whine, "but why can't I have fruit roll-ups in my lunch? So-and-so has them!" My reply is simply, "that's not something I buy for lunches." And zooming out for a second—because this part really matters: The goal of school lunch is not perfection. It’s not about sending the “healthiest” or most impressive meal. It’s about packing enough food your child will actually eat… so they can focus, have energy, and feel good at school. That’s the win. And one thing that often gets overlooked: Peer influence isn’t always a bad thing. I’ve seen plenty of kids start trying new foods because of friends. They see that their friend likes it, so they think they might like it, too. Or they simply just want to be like their friend, and that's enough encouragement to try. For many kids, that social environment actually expands what they’re willing to eat—without any pressure from you. This has happened for both my kids! So yes, this phase is discouraging. But it's also part of your kid becoming more independent, which is a good thing! Hi Reader, You know what I’ve missed while my kids have been in school all year? I’ve missed walking around the house picking pillows up off the floor all day. I’ve missed the steady hum of my kids arguing with each other that I can hear from any part of the house. I’ve missed making food and cleaning up the kitchen around the clock. I’ve missed being asked, “can we go somewhere fun now” at 7:30 in the morning. Lucky me, I’m about to have ALL of that, and more! Okay you know I love my kids a...

Hi Reader, One thing that kills me about a lot of kids’ vitamin marketing right now is how it convinces parents that normal kid struggles mean they’re missing something important. Your child is emotional? It’s nutrient deficiencies. Picky eater? Hidden hunger. Big feelings? Trouble focusing? This gummy will change everything. And while nutrient deficiencies absolutely can matter in some situations, a lot of these ads jump from reality: “a multivitamin may help fill some nutrition gaps” to...
