The lunchbox problem no one warns you about

Hi Reader,

If your kid is suddenly refusing foods they used to eat, there’s a good chance it’s not about the food... It’s about who’s sitting next to them at lunch.

A friend asked me something recently that I think so many of us are dealing with: “How do you handle peer pressure at school changing what your kid will eat?”

Their child used to happily eat cottage cheese. Loved it.
Now? Refuses it—because other kids don’t know what it is.

Hummus used to be in the regular lunch rotation too… until someone at school said it makes your breath smell. And just like that, it’s out.

Honestly, this stage is incredibly frustrating! It’s hard to watch foods your child used to eat easily start disappearing. Especially when they’re foods you feel good about.

Here’s the truth: This is normal (and not in your control).

As kids get older, they become more aware of what other people are eating, and what other people think. Food is just one place that shows up.

Instead of trying to convince them or fix it, keep your messaging simple and neutral:

  • Different families eat different foods.
  • Sometimes we’ll have the same things as friends.
  • Sometimes we won’t—and that’s okay.

No big explanations. No food debates. Just steady, matter-of-fact confidence. The only answer you need when they whine, "but why can't I have fruit roll-ups in my lunch? So-and-so has them!" My reply is simply, "that's not something I buy for lunches."

And zooming out for a second—because this part really matters:

The goal of school lunch is not perfection. It’s not about sending the “healthiest” or most impressive meal.

It’s about packing enough food your child will actually eat… so they can focus, have energy, and feel good at school.

That’s the win.

And one thing that often gets overlooked: Peer influence isn’t always a bad thing.

I’ve seen plenty of kids start trying new foods because of friends. They see that their friend likes it, so they think they might like it, too. Or they simply just want to be like their friend, and that's enough encouragement to try.

For many kids, that social environment actually expands what they’re willing to eat—without any pressure from you. This has happened for both my kids!

So yes, this phase is discouraging. But it's also part of your kid becoming more independent, which is a good thing!

My Favorite for Digestive Support 💩

We had some sickness in our house recently and I found myself reaching for this every day since appetites were low and toast was 90% of meals. It’s gentle enough to use daily and I mixed it into both juice and electrolyte drinks very easily! No flavor or texture. And it definitely helped! I would 100% keep it on hand for when you need it.

Have a great week,

Hi Reader, If you’ve ever thought, “My kid eats fruit… but basically no vegetables… is that bad??” You are so not alone. And honestly? I want to take a little pressure off you today. Because somewhere along the way, fruit got demoted. Vegetables became the gold standard… and fruit started to feel like the less impressive option. But nutritionally? That’s not really how it works. Fruit and vegetables are both doing a lot of heavy lifting. And in some cases… fruit is outperforming vegetables in...

Hi Reader, OK, Amazon officially has a “big sale” every 5 minutes now. And frankly, I think it’s so wrong how some brands and resellers change their prices to make it look like an item is on sale, while it’s actually minimally or not at all on sale. BUT. I’m still a deal hunter by nature, and I always feel like I’m winning when I snag something at a good price. So, I pulled together some of my best sellers and my absolute favorite items that are quality buys – and the discounted price is...

Hi Reader, I saw you clicked on my robot vacuum/mop in Monday's newsletter… and I feel like I need to fully explain myself. 😅 I don’t throw around the phrase “life-changing” lightly. But this has genuinely been one of those things for me. Not in a dramatic way—just in a very real, everyday way where something that used to sit in the background of my brain…is just handled. My floors are clean when I wake up. I’m not constantly noticing crumbs or dirt. And I don’t have that mental note of “ugh...
