Hi Reader, This time of year always sneaks up on me! All of a sudden it’s field days, end of year parties, teacher gifts, schedule changes, and SO many things to keep up with. There’s two things that help me keep track of everything, so that I don’t constantly have that background feeling of don’t forget this, don’t forget that. The very moment something comes into my head, or I read the email about the party, or whatever it is–I offload it. There’s no, “I’ll deal with this later.” Nope nope nope. I have forced myself into the habit of immediately depositing it where it needs to go. Where does it go? Only one of two places. Both have a widget on my phone home screen so I can see them both at all times! Place #1: the Skylight Calendar. If it’s something that goes on a calendar, it goes there. This is 100% not an ad (but it should be!)–this system has been crucial for us. I don’t have to wait til the kids are home from school to remind them about something. I don’t have to just try to remember. Whether it’s an assignment or an event, for anyone in the family, it goes there. Place #2: the Todoist app. This is my brain dump central. I use Todoist as a running list for anything that pops into my brain during the day–things I need to do, follow up on, or just don’t want to forget. The biggest shift for me has been focusing on capturing things instead of remembering them. Half the time I’ll just say, “Hey Siri, add ___ in Todoist,” and move on. It’s simple, but it keeps all those little loose ends from piling up in my head. Before I had these simple systems in place, my brain was doing everything–tracking, remembering, reminding. Now it’s more like:
And my brain doesn’t have to do both jobs at once. It’s made a big difference in how overwhelmed I feel! This is how the widgets look on my phone. I love that I can see a few items on each so I have a quick reminder about what’s coming up whenever I need it without even having to open an app. Do you have any apps you use daily that you love? Hi Reader, After spending $12 on two frozen treats (HOW) at the pool yesterday, I thought it was a good time to refresh our memories on some store bought summertime treats to keep in the freezer! There’s a few new products out this summer, and some old favorites. These are all ones that are on the healthier side, as far as treats go! A lot of the no sugar added popsicle boxes look incredibly similar to the ones that DO have a lot of sugar added, so just make sure to check the label when you...
Hi Reader, We all know the mental load of feeding kids goes way up in the summer time. More snacks. More food requests. More meals at home. More random kids at your house needing to be fed. Before you add another thing to your mental to-do list, save this email. (I swear yesterday alone I added 19 things to my to-do list. Sign the camp forms. Make camp carpool plans. Get a light bulb for the closet, buy goggles, call the plumber. OK, I will spare you the rest but I know you feel this in your...
Hi Reader, You know what I’ve missed while my kids have been in school all year? I’ve missed walking around the house picking pillows up off the floor all day. I’ve missed the steady hum of my kids arguing with each other that I can hear from any part of the house. I’ve missed making food and cleaning up the kitchen around the clock. I’ve missed being asked, “can we go somewhere fun now” at 7:30 in the morning. Lucky me, I’m about to have ALL of that, and more! Okay you know I love my kids a...
