Hi Reader, There are very few moments when I’m genuinely scared of my children…but there’s one that haunts me. It’s the after-sports hangry meltdown. They’re the dangerous combination of tired and ravenous, where they’re SO hungry that they get feral. Like I’m pretty sure I’ve been hissed at. It goes without saying that I try to avoid this at all costs because once they go to that place…it’s like climbing a mountain to bring them back. And it’s not their fault, I don’t blame them! I can’t expect them to stay on top of their fuel needs. That’s my job. So today I’m sharing my favorite tips to keep your active kids fed, happy, and meltdown-free—because nothing kills post-game vibes faster than a hunger-induced scream-cry. Electrolyte drinks: fad or legit? When are they helpful? After intense, prolonged exercise, in hot and humid environments, or after significant fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhea. Yes, especially if the electrolyte drink/powder you choose has a lot of sugar and/or a lot of salt. People tend to already get too much of these in their diet, so you don’t want to unnecessarily add even more! Kids Sports Hydration Faves

Hi Reader, I feel like as a dietitian I’ve been shouting about fiber from the mountaintops for the past 10 years, so I’m just a tad bit bitter that it’s just getting its time in the spotlight now. But, better late than never and all that jazz. 🤪 Even if your kid is having regular bowel movements, they still may need some more fiber in their diet. A GREAT goal is to serve a fruit or veggie 3 times a day, and whole grains, nuts, or beans, at least once a day. If you’re already getting that in,...
Hi Reader, Today I want to peer pressure you into trying something that I’m obsessed with and it’s all thanks to my mom. (Thanks mom!) For as long as I can remember, anytime I was working on a giant pile of homework, which was basically every single night in high school, she would always bring me a hot mug of herbal tea. Usually lemon. And it was. The. Best. Thing. Ever. Somehow it always brought me comfort every single time. It was like the little thing to look forward to and enjoy amidst...
Hi Reader, I’ll be honest – Halloween has never been my favorite. Mostly I just wonder why it can’t be on a Friday or Saturday every year. I always feel TERRIBLE for our teachers the day after Halloween! Every year around this time, I get the same question: “How much candy should I let my kids have?” Here’s my very professional, very real answer: let them eat the candy. Trying to tightly control how much they eat usually backfires. It makes candy feel extra special and can lead to kids...
