I’m done

Hi Reader,

I am officially done. Done making weekday breakfasts for everyone else. 💃

There are many ways your elementary and older kids can feed themselves that do not have to involve you whatsoever.

This does not make you a bad mom.

Kids NEED independence and they need to learn they are capable of a whole heck of a lot.

There was a part of me that was like, “am I being lazy? Am I avoiding some motherly duty to make them a beautiful breakfast?”

No, and noooooooo.

Do they maybe need some teaching and guidance? Sure! But it’s worth it to help them learn and then free yourself forever.

Some kids are eager for this. Some are not. I have one of each in my house. They still both do it.

One kid is happily making eggs and toast, and the other is pretty stuck on plain Cheerios.

I. Don’t. Care.

At this point my job is to buy relatively healthy options, make sure they know how to do it and clean up after themselves, and then occasionally provide support as needed.

That’s it!

Here’s our list of typical weekday breakfasts:

  • Plain Cheerios
  • Three Wishes Chocolate cereal
  • Kodiak Cakes frozen waffles
  • Smoothies
  • Bagel & cream cheese
  • Eggs & toast

And some days I’ll put out some cut fruit too, but it honestly doesn’t happen every day!

Ben bought this tiny egg pan on a whim because it made him laugh, but it ended up being perfect for our tiny chef who loves using it!

The Easiest Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

An easy weeknight dinner that feels like it took a lot of time and effort but it didn't?! Sign me up. I created this air fryer meal because my family lives for a chicken and rice meal, but I had never quite perfected boneless skinless chicken thighs until I tried them in the air fryer.

Hi Reader, A mom wrote to me last week sharing a dilemma that I’m sure a lot of you relate to. She was telling me how helpful it is for her kids to eat lunch from the school cafeteria – it saves both time & money – but she worried because other moms said they “wouldn’t feed their kids that crap.” So she wanted to know, is it okay to feed her kids the cafeteria food? Is it really that bad as these other moms are saying? First – I told her that feeding our kids is always about more than just...

School Lunch Packing Toolkit Cover Page

Hi Reader, You know when you see some startling headline, like what I just saw yesterday – “sparkling water now linked to colorectal cancer” and you want to know whether it’s ACTUALLY a real concern, or if you can just go on living your life? I wanted to make it quick and easy for you to get to the bottom of it, no matter what the headline is. So I created a prompt that you can copy and paste directly into ChatGPT that will evaluate the claim the same way I would. (Except ChatGPT will do it...

Hi Reader, If you have a kid starting school for the first time or starting at a new school, and you’re feeling a little nervous about how lunchtime is going to go, there are a few things you can practice at home ahead of time. These are things their teacher will appreciate, too! 1. If you only do one thing, do this: Do a full lunchbox test run. Pack their lunch and snack exactly the way you plan to send it to school: water bottle, lunch box, thermos, pouches — everything. Then have them open...
