I have no choice but to quit 😵

Hi Reader,

I’m officially quitting Mama Knows Nutrition for the next month because my new full-time job is registering my kids for summer camps. It’s a high-stress gig (those camp spots disappear fast!) with negative pay, and a lot of screaming (mostly mine).

Okay, I’m joking, but only kind of! Every year, I block out how painful this process is, only to be ambushed by it again.

And seriously, how am I supposed to predict what June Me needs? June Me is a total wild card! She could want back-to-back camps or to just wake up and say, “GO OUTSIDE!”. Who knows?!

If you’re also getting in the trenches of camp sign-ups, let me save you some pain with my trusty camp organization spreadsheet I created. Because if we’re going to suffer, we might as well suffer in an organized fashion.

New Recipe From Mama Knows

Three Ingredient Oatmeal Cookies

I love this recipe because…three ingredients. THREE! That’s it! No baking soda, baking powder, room temperature butter, etc. It’s also nutrient dense, lower in sugar than most cookies, and is good for toddlers, kids, teens, and I love them, too!

Nutrition News Of The Week: Red dye...dies?

Here’s what you need to know about what happened with Red Dye No. 3 this week! THIS POST from @unbiasedscipod explains what happened extremely well. I’m going to pull out the main highlights for you!

  • What happened? The FDA banned use of Red No. 3 in food and drugs. Manufacturers have until 2027 (food) and 2028 (drugs) to reformulate.
  • Why did they ban it? There is NO evidence that the dye causes cancer or any other harmful effect in humans. However, the FDA is required to ban any color additive that causes cancer in animals or humans. And there were studies showing that male rats could get cancer when ingesting extremely high doses of Red No. 3 through a mechanism that doesn’t occur in humans.
  • What foods have Red No. 3? Some candies, cakes, cookies, frozen desserts, and frostings. But it’s less commonly used than other color additives, like Red No. 40.

Why isn’t Red No. 40 being banned? We don’t have evidence to suggest that it is harmful to health.

What I’m Loving This Week

I’ve never had a great place to store my onions and sweet potatoes. But guess what? I do now! I LOVE this pantry organizer. It’s simple to put together, looks nice in my pantry and works well for storing produce! I love that it stacks so I can save some space. If you haven’t figured out a great place to store yours yet either – this is it!

Cheering you on always,

Banana Blueberry Muffins

Hi Reader, I recently stumbled upon some information that left me absolutely floored, and I had to share it with you. You know those big food companies that fill grocery shelves with ultra-processed foods that are extra tasty but very low on nutrition? Well, it turns out some of them have also owned major weight loss programs… So, the same companies encouraging us to indulge are also profiting from our desire to lose weight. It’s a cycle that keeps people bouncing between overindulgence and...
