they’re backkkkk

Hi Reader,

School = germs. 😭

The moment you put groups of kids together indoors, the germs take hold. And really, it’s no surprise, because kids are gross. They are constantly alternating between touching every surface they walk past, and putting their fingers in their noses and mouths. It’s like they’re subconsciously cataloguing every possible strain of bacteria available via handrail before age 12.

(I can’t be the only one who has been saying for years on repeat, “STOP TOUCHING EVERYTHING.”)

And yes, it’s way worse for younger kids in daycare, preschool and their earliest years of school, because they are still building their immune systems.

So what can you do? They barely just got back to school… and we are all trying to keep them there!

Should you give your kid a multivitamin? Elderberry? Something to “boost their immunity”!? Wait…can immunity be “boosted”?

Short answer is no. Long answer is that a diet with plenty of fruit and/or veg, lean proteins, nuts and seeds is going to help their immune system work to the best of its ability. Keeping up their vitamin D will support their immune system, too.

And, a fairly recent study found that saline nasal drops (or spray) actually can shorten the duration of a cold, so I always have these on hand!

Other things with good proof that help make sick kids more comfortable:

  • A cool mist humidifier can help soothe irritated noses/throats and loosen mucus so congestion and coughing are a little less miserable.
  • Honey for ages 1+. Any honey will do! Doesn’t have to be the fancy kind. It helps reduce cough frequency/severity.

And of course, the ever reliable duo of fluids & rest!

Hi Reader, No matter what grade my kids are starting each year, I’ve found that the beginning of the school year always brings extra emotions in my house. I am no stranger to the dreaded after school meltdown. And even though I know to anticipate it, it still can be hard to get everyone feeling regulated again! Sometimes the answer is incredibly simple: feed them. It’s rare that you know exactly what they ended up eating at school. And that’s fairly out of your control. But if they are hangry...

Air Fryer Chicken Things on Rice with Salad

Hi Reader, I am officially done. Done making weekday breakfasts for everyone else. 💃 There are many ways your elementary and older kids can feed themselves that do not have to involve you whatsoever. This does not make you a bad mom. Kids NEED independence and they need to learn they are capable of a whole heck of a lot. There was a part of me that was like, “am I being lazy? Am I avoiding some motherly duty to make them a beautiful breakfast?” No, and noooooooo. Do they maybe need some...

Hi Reader, A mom wrote to me last week sharing a dilemma that I’m sure a lot of you relate to. She was telling me how helpful it is for her kids to eat lunch from the school cafeteria – it saves both time & money – but she worried because other moms said they “wouldn’t feed their kids that crap.” So she wanted to know, is it okay to feed her kids the cafeteria food? Is it really that bad as these other moms are saying? First – I told her that feeding our kids is always about more than just...
