Minimize after school meltdowns

Hi Reader,

No matter what grade my kids are starting each year, I’ve found that the beginning of the school year always brings extra emotions in my house. I am no stranger to the dreaded after school meltdown. And even though I know to anticipate it, it still can be hard to get everyone feeling regulated again!

Sometimes the answer is incredibly simple: feed them.

It’s rare that you know exactly what they ended up eating at school. And that’s fairly out of your control. But if they are hangry when they get home, you know how that amplifies their meltdowns!

Below are a few of my simplest after school snack favorites. And scroll down to the recipes below if you have the capacity to make some of the snacks yourself – I have tons of nutritious ideas for you to keep on hand for easy after school snacking.

Quick snacks:

And for you – you have GOT to try the new Barebells Brownie Batter protein bars!! It’s chocolatey, crispy on the outside and has a gooey middle. Seriously try it! I’m currently finding them at Target or Trader Joe’s!

A Little MKN Update 💛

You may start noticing something new in these emails: from time to time, I’ll be partnering with brands I love to sponsor a portion of the newsletter.

With the way that social media has changed, this newsletter has truly become my favorite place to share practical nutrition advice, recipes and recommendations with you — and I want to keep putting more of my time and energy into creating helpful content here while keeping it free for everyone.

Partnering with brands makes that possible. And just like with everything I share at MKN, I’m very selective about what makes it into your inbox. I’ll only partner with brands and products I genuinely like, trust and feel good about recommending to you — sponsored or not.

Sponsored content will always be clearly labeled, and the rest of the newsletter will still be the same MKN you’re used to.

Mostly, I just wanted to give you a heads-up before you start seeing it. I’m so grateful you’re here and that you continue to make this little corner of the internet possible. 💛

Hi Reader, I am officially done. Done making weekday breakfasts for everyone else. 💃 There are many ways your elementary and older kids can feed themselves that do not have to involve you whatsoever. This does not make you a bad mom. Kids NEED independence and they need to learn they are capable of a whole heck of a lot. There was a part of me that was like, “am I being lazy? Am I avoiding some motherly duty to make them a beautiful breakfast?” No, and noooooooo. Do they maybe need some...

Hi Reader, A mom wrote to me last week sharing a dilemma that I’m sure a lot of you relate to. She was telling me how helpful it is for her kids to eat lunch from the school cafeteria – it saves both time & money – but she worried because other moms said they “wouldn’t feed their kids that crap.” So she wanted to know, is it okay to feed her kids the cafeteria food? Is it really that bad as these other moms are saying? First – I told her that feeding our kids is always about more than just...

Hi Reader, You know when you see some startling headline, like what I just saw yesterday – “sparkling water now linked to colorectal cancer” and you want to know whether it’s ACTUALLY a real concern, or if you can just go on living your life? I wanted to make it quick and easy for you to get to the bottom of it, no matter what the headline is. So I created a prompt that you can copy and paste directly into ChatGPT that will evaluate the claim the same way I would. (Except ChatGPT will do it...
